Excessive Tearing

Tears are necessary to lubricate the eyes and wash away foreign bodies and other particles. Excessive tearing, also known as epiphora, occurs when too many tears are produced or when the eyes are unable to drain properly.

Causes of Excessive Tearing

Tearing of the eyes can be caused by several different factors, including:

  • Allergies
  • Blepharitis
  • Blocked tear duct
  • Ingrown eyelashes
  • Conjunctivitis
  • A stye or chalazion
  • Dry eye
  • Environmental irritants
  • Foreign bodies
  • Infection
  • Irritation
  • Trauma

Symptoms of Excessive Tearing

  • Constant tearing of the eyes
  • Redness and swelling
  • Pain

Treatment of Excessive Tearing

After a thorough medical examination of the eye, treatment of watery eyes will depend on the underlying cause of the condition. Some of the methods of treatment may include:

  • Antibiotic or corticosteroid eye drops
  • Surgical removal of the blockage
  • Surgical implantation of an artificial tear duct

Artificial tears or antihistamines may be recommended to treat dry eye and to relieve symptoms.
