Cataract Diagnosis and Surgical Options

Cataract Diagnosis and Surgical Options from Our Ophthalmologists Near You

Ideally, the light entering your eyes focuses correctly on the retina at the back of the eyeball. However, various conditions and diseases can distort light, including cataracts, which involve clouding your lenses. Cataracts generally affect those over 60 and become more likely as we continue aging. Diabetes mellitus, exposure to ultraviolet radiation, smoking, and alcohol use also contribute to the development of cataracts. If you need an eye surgeon near Poughkeepsie or Yorktown Heights, NY, consider our team at Seeta Eye Centers.

Diagnosis and Early Treatment of Cataracts

The diagnosis of cataracts often occurs after patients experience:

•             Blurred or cloudy vision

•             Light sensitivity

•             Problems with nighttime driving

•             Seeing halos around light sources.

Since these symptoms also occur with other eye diseases, cataracts are generally diagnosed during a patient’s annual eye exam.

Quitting smoking, making dietary changes, and wearing sunglasses can slow the progression of cataracts, but does not stop it. As cataracts progress and increasingly interfere with everyday functioning, surgery performed by an ophthalmologist becomes the primary cataract treatment.

Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery generally occurs outpatient and has few or no complications. Generally, the procedure is quick- you are at the surgery center no more then 2 hours from entrance to departure.

Before your eye surgery, our ophthalmologist will perform an ultrasound to determine your eyes’ size and shape so the correct intraocular lens or IOL is selected for implantation. The surgery uses an ultrasound probe to open the lens capsule, after which we remove your clouded lens before inserting the IOL into the lens capsule and stitching it shut to keep the IOL in place. Your vision will be blurred following surgery but generally is dramatically better the very next day. Patients generally wear an eye patch for a few days while sleeping and must avoid stressing the eyes due to physical contact, bending over, or other physical strain.

Soon, the cloudiness will disappear as bright colors return, allowing you to return to your usual activities.  Today we offer many options to diminish dependance on corrective lenses after surgery. Cataract surgery has a very high success rate with most patients having marked improvement in their vision.
