The KAMRA® Inlay offers an alternative to glasses for men and women who are experiencing presbyopia, an unavoidable age-related loss of near vision. Thinner than a contact lens, the KAMRA Inlay is placed in the cornea of just one eye, providing magnification for up close work without compromising distance vision in either eye. This enables the KAMRA Inlay to eliminate blurry vision when reading, working on the computer, using your phone, and performing other near vision tasks, even as presbyopia progresses.
If you are beginning to struggle with near vision or if your vision has been blurry for some time, call Seeta Eye Centers at 845-454-1025 to schedule a KAMRA Inlay consultation at our Poughkeepsie or Fishkill location. Our board-certified ophthalmologists offer vision enhancing services to men and women living throughout the Hudson Valley area.

The KAMRA Inlay Procedure
Prior to placing your KAMRA Inlay, your eye will be prepared with numbing drops. This helps ensure your comfort during and after the procedure. After you have been made comfortable, a laser will be used to create a small pocket within your cornea into which the inlay can be inserted. Once inserted, the KAMRA Inlay is carefully placed directly above the pupil. When needed, punctal plugs can be inserted as well to improve tear production and reduce risks of dry eyes. This plug may stay in place permanently or be removed after a few weeks. This is entirely dependent on your needs.
The KAMRA Inlay is a mini-ring with a small pinhole in the center. Placed over the pupil, this pinhole ensures only focused light is allowed to enter the retina, reducing blur and restoring near vision.
An in-office procedure that takes only about 20 minutes, inlay placement will make driving difficult for up to 48 hours. You will need to arrange for a ride home after surgery and may find it helpful to have a friend or family member around to help with certain tasks during the initial phase of recovery. During your time in our care, we will cover this and other helpful preparations to ensure you are equipped to recover as quickly and comfortably as possible.
KAMRA Inlay Recovery
Following KAMRA Inlay surgery it is best to allow yourself 24 to 48 hours to rest. Most people find they are able to resume a majority of activities within 48 hours. During this time, it is incredibly important that you adhere to the instructions provided by our office. These may include:
- Taking medications
- Using eye drops
- Not wearing glasses
We will schedule follow-up appointments, the first being within a few days of your procedure, to gauge recovery and help you determine when it is safe to resume all normal activities. For the most positive results, it is best to wait until you have received the go-ahead from your ophthalmologist before resuming more demanding tasks.
It can take one week or more for vision to begin to stabilize following KAMRA Inlay surgery. Some patients may continue to experience vision fluctuations for up to six months. During this time, you will be instructed to perform certain tasks, such as reading without glasses, to help your eyes adapt. Performing these tasks, using all prescribed medications, and attending your follow-up visits will all work to ease your recovery process and help you get the most out of your newly restored vision.
Risks associated with the KAMRA Inlay include general surgical risks, such as infection, in addition to specific risks including pain, dry eyes, and general discomfort. You reduce your risk for complications by closely following our pre and postoperative instructions.
Complications including double vision, color and contrast difficulties, halos around lights, poor night vision, and ghost images are possible as well and may occur even when instructions are followed. These things may self-correct and will be monitored as you recover. If problems persist, the inlay can be removed. Complications are rare, but not impossible. We will cover these in detail during your initial consultation.
KAMRA Inlay Candidates
You may be a good candidate for near vision correction with the KAMRA Inlay if you are:
- Over the age of 40
- Frustrated by reading glasses
- Looking for a permanent solution for near vision loss
Good candidates for the KAMRA Inlay should be free of existing eye diseases and disorders such as cataracts, glaucoma, or macular degeneration. If you are experiencing a more serious eye condition, we can discuss treatment options during your initial consultation. Our Poughkeepsie and Fishkill offices are equipped with the latest in vision-saving technology and our board-certified ophthalmologists have the experience necessary to diagnose and treat even the most complex issues.
If you have grown tired of prescription eyewear or are becoming increasingly frustrated by diminishing near vision, you may be the ideal KAMRA Inlay candidate. The best way to know for sure is by calling 845-454-1025 to schedule a consultation.
Presbyopia is a part of the aging process. Unavoidable, presbyopia occurs as proteins in the lens of the eye begin to change, causing it to harden. At the same time, muscle fibers around the lens gradually become less flexible. Combined with the hardening and thickening of the lens, eyes have a harder time focusing, which makes close-up work much more difficult.
If you have noticed the need to hold your phone or other reading objects, like books or newspapers, further away to see clearly, you may be developing presbyopia. Additional symptoms may include eye strain and fatigue, and headaches. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and are over the age of 40, give our Hudson Valley eye doctors a call to schedule an appointment and learn if presbyopia is the cause. Even if the KAMRA Inlay is not right for you, there are other treatments, including reading glasses, that can address presbyopia and restore clear vision.
It is important to note that the KAMRA Inlay may not fully correct presbyopia. Reading glasses may still be necessary under certain circumstances.
Financing Your Procedure
As an “elective” procedure, the KAMRA Inlay is not covered by insurance. We accept cash and major credit cards for KAMRA Inlay surgery, but understand these options are not ideal for everyone. Some patients choose to use their FSA to cover the cost of vision correction, but this is not an option for everyone, either.
To help ensure our procedures are available to as many people as possible, we are pleased to work with CareCredit®, a health care financing company that offers a range of plans, including 0% APR, that can help make inlay surgery affordable. You can apply for financing at the CareCredit website or with an application from our office. During your initial consultation we can cover financing options in more detail if such services would prove useful to you.
