Woman taking off glasses and looking upwardSMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is an alternative to LASIK vision correction surgery that can help patients find less reliance on glasses and contact lenses. Completely bladeless, SMILE is performed with the proprietary VisuMax femtosecond laser, allowing for vision correction in one simple and single step. This eliminates risks for complications that can arise from flap creation (LASIK) and corneal ablation (PRK), making SMILE a safer and more attractive option for some of our patients.

SMILE is designed to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism. It is not intended for the treatment of hyperopia or higher-order aberrations (HOAs). SMILE may actually worsen HOAs, which are still best treated with LASIK or PRK. With LASIK, a laser or handheld instrument is used to create a small flap in the cornea. Through this flap, another laser is used to reshape corneal tissue, helping to improve light refraction and enhance visual acuity. The procedure typically takes around 30 minutes to complete and may require a short recovery period. Blurred vision, dry eyes, and other complications are fairly common, though most often short-lived, following LASIK.

For SMILE surgery, a lenticule (a small, lens-shaped disc of tissue) is made in the cornea with a femtosecond laser. This disc is removed through a micro-incision, permanently altering the shape of the cornea and providing an immediate improvement in vision. As with LASIK, some blurriness and vision difficulties may be present for a few days, but most people can resume normal activities within 24 to 48 hours.

Results from these different laser vision correction options are similarly reliable. LASIK can treat a greater variety of conditions, but SMILE may be less invasive and more effective for patients with myopia. The best way to learn which option will meet your specific needs is through a one-on-one consultation with one of the board-certified ophthalmologists at Seeta Eye Center.
