LASIK Procedure

Recovery from LASIK can take up to one week, though many patients are back to “normal” within 24 hours. During your time in our care, we will help you determine when it is safe to resume all of your activities.

For the first 24 hours following surgery, it is important that you avoid doing anything that could irritate your eyes. During this time, be sure to avoid:

  • Rubbing your eyes
  • Getting water or soap in your eyes
  • Watching TV or reading

It is also advisable to avoid alcohol consumption for at least one day following LASIK surgery.

The day after LASIK surgery, you should be able to resume many of your normal activities. You will still need to avoid getting water in your eyes, but reading, computer work, and even driving are okay at this point. Monitor your responses and modify your behavior if additional rest is needed.

Within three days of LASIK, many patients are able to resume even more activities including moderate exercise, swimming with goggles, and even waxing eyebrows and applying makeup. Some restrictions will remain in place on more advanced exercises and it is still necessary to avoid poking your eyes at this point.

After a week, a majority of patients report being back to “normal.” At this point, you can resume all activities, including those that take place in the water, so long as you have been given the go-ahead by your ophthalmologist. If you have any concerns during recovery, it is very important that you contact your eye surgeon right away. While extremely rare, complications can arise that will need to be addressed quickly to help ensure uninterrupted vision.
