Recovery from cataract surgery is typically very quick. Your vision may be cloudy, blurry, or otherwise imperfect for a few hours up to a few weeks, but this should self-correct as your eyes adjust to your new intraocular lens.
Remember, as your vision adjusts, you may undergo different stages in which various distortions or disturbances are present. These, too, should self-correct while your eyes adjust over 24 hours to 14 days.
There may be some redness, particularly in the whites of the eye. This is normal and, as with other side-effects, should improve with time. If you experience pain while in recovery, however, it is a good idea to contact our office for a quick examination. Discomfort is not expected after cataract surgery.
You Play a Role in Your Comfort
One of the easiest ways to avoid problems following cataract surgery is to follow all of the pre and postoperative instructions provided by our office. These may include medications, herbs, and supplements to discontinue along with aftercare, such as eye shields, cleaning instructions, and medications that will play a direct role in your healing response. Be sure also to rest, giving yourself enough time to fully recover, before you resume all of your normal activities.
Complete healing can be expected within six to eight weeks, though many people are able to resume normal activities long before this point. During your follow-up visits, we will carefully assess your recovery and help you determine when it is safe to resume more demanding tasks.
