Optometrist vs Optician vs Ophthalmologist: Which Eye Doctor Do You Need?

Woman wondering which kind of eye doctor she needsAn Optician is a professional who assists with the fitting of eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other eyewear. Opticians have undergone additional training and education and will have specific certification or an associate’s degree.

An optometrist is doctor who has focused his or her practice on diagnosing and treating diseases of the eye. Optometrists can also perform routine exams, determine proper lens strength, and provide prescription medications for issues such as glaucoma. An optometrist will have a medical degree in optometry (O.D.)

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (M.D.) who can perform surgical procedures on the eyes. Ophthalmologists must attend four years of postgraduate specialty training after obtaining their medical doctorate. Ophthalmologists preform cataract surgery, refractive lens exchange, LASIK, and other vision surgery procedures.

Ophthalmologist Yasha S. Modi is Assistant Professor of Retinal Diseases, Uveitis, and Vitreoretinal Surgery, Director of Uveitis, and Director of Tele-Retina at New York University. He is also coauthor of The Yale Guide to Surgical Ophthalmology.

Ophthalmologist Andreas Wolter is board-certified and a former Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army who served as a Staff Ophthalmologist at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and West Point before joining Seeta Eye Center. He also served as Chief of Service at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas.

Dr. Melvin Guzman, our optometrist, has years of experience performing routine eye exams and diagnosing and treating general eye diseases and disorders. He also assists our ophthalmologists during surgical procedures.
