New York Ophthalmologist Andreas Wolter, M.D. of Seeta Eye Centers in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. counseled on the risk of glaucoma and erectile dysfunction (ED). “While they might seem unrelated, it is actually important that male patients coming to us for eye exams be sure to share everything in their medical history, as men with erectile dysfunction (ED) have a nearly 3-fold greater risk for also having Open-Angle Glaucoma (OAG) than men with normal erectile function”, stressed Dr. Wolter.

According to a recent publication in the January 2012 journal Ophthalmology, there may well be a common mechanism based on metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance that leads to chronic inflammation of the lining of blood vessels throughout the body-a known contributor to both ED and OAG. “Sometimes when we ask patients to tell us about all of the medical conditions they suffer from or tell us about all of the medications they take, they selectively omit those that might be a little sensitive-such as around the area of erectile dysfunction”, noted Dr. Wolter.
