The Ciliary Body is a structure within your eye that is located behind the colored part of they eye or the Iris. The Ciliary Body produces a clear and colorless fluid, called Aqueous Humor. Located at the base of the Iris is a “tissue filter” called the Trabecular Meshwork. Normally, Aqueous Humor freely drains through the Trabecular Meshwork. This production and drainage is balanced so as to maintain a “normal’ Intraocular Pressure (IOP). It is ideal to have equilibrium of Aqueous Humor fluid so that a “normal” pressure in the eye is maintained.
Any situation in which either too much Aqueous Humor is produced or insufficient Aqueous Humor is drained will result in an elevation of the Intraocular Pressure (IOP). An elevated IOP is one of the primary causes of Glaucoma.
There are two more common types of Glaucoma-Primary Open Angle Glaucoma and Angle Closure Glaucoma or Narrow Angle Glaucoma that we will discuss.
